The Equipment Safety Rules

The Equipment Safety Rules (“the Rules”) outline the safety requirements for participants of the EESS, including Responsible Suppliers and certifiers. This is to achieve consistency in the areas of certification decision making, determining standards, what information is uploaded to the EESS Registration Database, and more. Consistency of the Rules is one of the main aims of the EESS. The Rules also provide guidance on interpretation of the registration requirements and definitions.

The final document forms part of the model legislation. Participation in the EESS requires compliance with the Rules.

The Rules are regularly reviewed by the Standing Committee of Officials, in consultation with stakeholders and updated as required.

18 December 2020 – Addendum to Equipment Safety Rules

The Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) Standing Committee of Officials (SCO) has approved a request from industry to delay the implementation of certain safety standard new editions or amendments that were due to come into force at the end of June 2020. The addendum to the Equipment Safety Rules allows industry to extend certification and registrations to 31 July 2021 for camping refrigerators only. The Queensland Regulator issued a Rule (by gazette notice) to grant the use of existing safety standards in force prior to 30 June 2020. This will allow equipment currently registered to have the related certificate extended (if required). Further information can be found here.
